Transportation in Melbourne

Melbourne has a large international and domestic airport. It is located approximately 20kms or half an hours drive from Melbourne CBD. It can be easily accessed by car, taxi or bus.

Taxis: There are more than 3000 cabs in Melbourne, they are available on call 24 hours, 7 days weekly. They can be hailed off the street, at taxi ranks or booked by telephone. Taxis are yellow in colour. Call 3 10 08 from anywhere in Australia to be connected to a taxi service in your area. Car rental – Car rental is available at the airport, city and suburban outlets.

Airport City Service: Sky bus operates a 24-hour service between the airport and Spencer Street railway Station. It runs every 30 minutes from 6am – midnight; hourly from midnight – 6am.

Public Transport System: Melbourne’s ticketing system operates on all trams, train and bus services in the metropolitan area, with electronically encoded tickets called met cards. Met cards can be purchased from train stations, on trams and buses or from met card ticket outlets. Trams: Trams run throughout Melbourne City and in most areas of Melbourne’s surrounds on average, trams run at approximately 10-minute intervals and timetables are usually listed on tram stop poles. Tram tickets can be purchased on trams or from ticket outlets.

City Circle Tram: This is a free service that skirts the perimeter of the city grid, Running along La Trobe, Spencer, Flinders and Spring Streets. The trams are Burgundy coloured. They run in both directions at ten-minute intervals, daily From 10am – 6pm. They take 40 minutes to complete a full circuit.

Trains: Train services run similarly to tram services and just like tram services, they normally operate between 5am – midnight from Mon – Sat and 8am – 11pm on Sun. Train tickets can be purchased at train stations and from ticket outlets.

Buses: Bus services run similarly to tram and train services and tickets can be purchased on buses and from ticket outlets.

NightRider Buses: These depart from Swanston Street (between Collins and Flinders Streets) hourly from 12.30am – 4.30am on Sat and Sun mornings. Buses usually travel to the outer suburbs of Melbourne. For more information on these services you can visit www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au
