Bank Accounts

You need to have an Australian bank account so your pay can be directly paid into your account. Australia has a variety of banks and building societies where you can obtain an account. The fees and charges are similar for each bank, but feel free to make enquiries and investigate their websites. To open a bank account, you need to visit your local branch and provide adequate identification. Identification is determined by a points system, with each form of evidence equating to a number of “points”. You will be asked to provide 3 or 4 forms of identification such as your passport, birth certificate, driver’s license, nurses’ registration or evidence of other bank accounts. Some banks will ask for a reference from your bank in your country of origin; however you do not need to provide this for all banks. You also need to have an address so your information can be forwarded to you. The main banks (The Big Four) in Australia and the contact details are as follows:

There are a number of other smaller banks and Credit Unions as well. Once you have applied for a bank account, the bank will forward you a keycard, which you can use in shops, automatic teller machines (ATM) to obtain cash and to make payments at most hotels and supermarkets.

You will be provided with a PIN number (Personal Identification Number), which you should keep confidential, as this is the only way you can use your keycard.

You should open your bank account within 2-4 weeks of arriving in Australia. If you apply after 6 weeks, it is more complicated to open an account and the rules regarding identification are much stricter.
