Income Tax

The Australian Taxation Department will tax you whilst working in Australia to ensure you are paying tax. Firstly you need to get a tax file number (TFN). To obtain a tax file number, you will need to complete the relevant form and lodge it with the Australian Tax Office. You can apply online or call 132861 from anywhere in Australia – they will be able to assist you with any enquiries and tell you where you can apply for your tax file number.

You need to have your tax file number within 28 days of commencing work in order to be taxed at the correct rate. You will need to be able to provide an address in Australia to be able to complete an application.

You have to have adequate identification such as a passport, copy of your letter of offer of employment and your Visa when applying for your TFN. The process can commence on the day you apply. Once you get your TFN, you need to provide this to your employer and they will calculate you tax rate depending on your salary.
